The cast and crew of Transparent are deeply connected to the trans civil rights movement. While in the thick of Season 4 production, our entire team made it a priority to rally around Gavin and express solidarity with trans youth everywhere; it was incredibly inspiring.

On Transparent we come to work with a feeling of gratitude, and we are united by our duty to serve the LGBT community. We seek ways of being supportive and actionable, and since so many of us were trans youth not long ago, we feel an acute responsibility to protect both future generations and the hurt children within us.

The idea for our PSA emerged from conversations I had with Chase Strangio, one of the ACLU lawyers on Gavin’s case. We were looking for a way we could highlight his case and the issues trans students face across the country. Several Transparent trans and gender non-conforming crew members spearheaded production; I directed, with Rain Valdez as producer, and Mel Mel Sukekawa-Mooring as editor.

While we’re disappointed that justice for Gavin has been delayed as his case heads back to the 4th Circuit, we’re honored to stand with him. Gavin’s case is more important now than ever before.

We’re so proud to be able to share the finished product with you:
