Our next big step

Today we at Standard Cyborg are launching the next chapter in our story. With the Water Leg, we made the world’s first fully functional, 3D-printed prosthetic for sale. The Water Leg design process allowed us to pioneer socket and alignment capture using only videos taken with your smartphone. Our mobile app is the world’s first ever app to order a prosthetic device. We’ve delivered excellent quality that has resulted in many happy amputees and prosthetists. We are really proud of what we have done. But it’s just the first step. Over the past year and a half, we’ve increased both our knowledge and the power of our internal tools to digitally design prosthetic devices. Today we want to turn those outwards.

We believe that software will dramatically improve prosthetics. There is a vast blue ocean of opportunity — from custom, variable durometer liners all the way to socket simulation. But before the industry can get there , it has to first turn the design process from offline to online, from physical to digital. And the very first step is designing check sockets. Once the design process is in ones and zeroes, computers can do the bulk of the heavy lifting, enabling practitioners to make the very best check sockets, for the most number of patients, with the least amount of back-breaking work. In broad strokes, we are fascinated by computational geometry for human augmentation and believe that technology can enable us to move beyond human capability. I’m an amputee — so that’s where we are starting.
Standard Cyborg Design Studio is the beginning of this. It is a real solution to check socket design — spanning simple and fast 3D scanning on an iPad, elegant and intuitive 3D modeling in your web browser, and no-nonsense 3D printing with PETG (Vivak). We want practitioners to be able to near-instantly turn their intuition and experience into product. And we want to enable them to spend more time with the patients they serve.
We’re excited to share this with you.
