We are proud to announce that after a great journey over almost two years, Standart is finally arriving in Japan! The Japanese version will launch on the 18th of March 2017 during Tokyo Coffee Festival.

The never-ending pursuit of quality and precision is one of the foundations on which the Japanese culture of craft stands. Since the beginning, we at Standart understood that if we were going to be successful, we had to balance visual aesthetics, well-curated content, and a clean, ethical business philosophy.

'I feel proud and humbled to have people around me who made this dream come true.'

The entrepreneurial and coffee-drinking spirit of Japan — both the old-school kissaten-style the hip third wave — has inspired much of the Standart philosophy. That sense of cohesion was so strong that we felt we simply must bring Standart to Japan, to become a part of the specialty coffee knowledge exchange in one of the most exciting communities in the world.

Standart Japan will bring readers the same quality-driven, carefully curated content in three chapters. The pilot issue is an almanac including some of our favourite pieces we published translated into Japanese, and a couple of brand new articles exclusive to Standart Japan.

The Adventure Begins

The coffee chapter takes you on a journey through the coffee producing behemoth that is Brazil, before given you the nitty gritty facts on the coffee cherry itself, industry faces, and coffee brewing devices.

The people chapter introduces you to your favourite baristas working behind the bar before delving into a cultural talk with Michal Phillips of Blue Bottle Coffee about coffee education in United States and Japan. Gwilym Davies of Prufrock Coffee in London offers some training tips before we switch focus back to a look at our favourite specialty coffee customer stereotypes.

The world chapter zips from Japan and Korea, through Amsterdam, New York, Seattle, and Texas in one massively over-caffeinated adventure.

We profile the goings on at Mahlkönig, the exclusive sponsor of the pilot issue of Standart Japan. Mahlkönig has supported us since the beginning, and we’re so proud that we can take them with us on this journey into uncharted waters.

Last but not least, we have an exclusive photo essay and brewing recipe with Tetsu Kasuya, the 2016 World Brewers Cup champion. He shares a little of his philosophy on life and coffee, before showing us how to brew a killer champion cup.

Director of Japan — Toshikazu Muromoto

‘Coffee is just a beverage. But this “just a beverage” attracts, inspires, and links so many people. I too am a prisoner of specialty coffee. I am grateful for the chance to link my work and my passion, and hope that my dream of making Standart Japan part of Japanese specialty coffee culture becomes a reality. I believe the pilot issue of Standart Japan is the beginning of a great journey together.’

The Barn × Standart Japan

Standart Japan will be launching at the Tokyo Coffee Festival which will take place on the 17th and 18th on March. We will be collaborating with our friends and partners The Barn Coffee Roasters Berlin at our booth, where The Barn owner Ralk Rüller will be brewing coffee fresh from the roastery in Germany. Tokyo Coffee Festival is the biggest coffee event in Japan and Standart is proud to be participating and engaging with great coffee people from all over Japan.

Launch event at Blue Bottle Coffee

Standart will be holding its very own launch party at Blue Bottle Coffee in Nakameguro to mark the beginning of our Japanese journey! We respect Blue Bottle’s values and chose to work with them to bring excellent coffee and great stories to the customers who love that great combination. If you are interested in attending, please reach out to Toshi.

We’re so happy to have the opportunity to share our passion and love of coffee and fine print with you all around the world! 🙌

‘The credo that states that good coffee is not all hype has been one of the fundamental values of Standart. The birth of Standart Japan has always been a dream of mine. I feel proud and humbled to have people around me who made this dream come true. The pilot issue of Standart Japan is not the final destination―it’s the first stop on what will be a long and exciting and journey.’
