Offseason trades & the games you just can’t miss this 2018 season!
With Spring ball in full swing (pun intended), baseball fans begin to turn their attention towards the start of the regular season.
Will the spring league results be an indicator of how the season will go?
Statistically speaking, no not really.
But, it still can give some indications to how teams are gelling with new players, and how they’re adjusting to life at their new clubs.
Here are some of the biggest moves that have happened this offseason and the matchups that MUST be on every baseball fans calendar this year!
BIGGEST OFFSEASON TRADES
- Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees
The saga of the Miami Marlins’ Offseason can be summarized by the conclusion of this deal. Where will Stanton go? The Yankees have beefed up their lineup once again by adding this slugger to their lineup. Giving the Bronx Bombers 2 Home Run Derby winners in as many years. The heart of this lineup will be giving pitchers nightmares when they’re staring down the bats of Aaron Judge & Giancarlo Stanton….eeesh
2. Angels get their man, slugging pitcher Shohei Ohtani
The world sat and waited to see where the Japanese phenom that is Shohei Ohtani ended up. Not many thought he’d end up in Los Angeles (Anahiem) where he won’t get as many at-bats as an NL team, but who could argue with spending the summer in Orange County, California — I mean, they’ve got Disneyland.
3. Evan Longoria to the SF Giants
Many thought Giancarlo may wind up in the Bay Area, but the Gigantes have decided to go with different route. With a team that has an aging core of players, we expected a bit of a rebuild. But with Longoria, they get a seasoned veteran who hasn’t fallen out of his prime quite yet.
4. Rockies Sign Wade Davis
The Rockies have now set the record for the highest paid reliever in MLB history. With Davis set to take over in the middle stretch of innings, hopefully, this will bring the Rockies back into the forefront of contention. We’ll see if the 3-year/52 Million dollar deal helps the mile-high hopeful.
5. St. Louis sign Marcell Ozuna
Another piece of the Miami firesale, Averaging .312 last year with the Marlins. St. Louis landed a great addition to their hitting and fielding. At 27, he’s ripe to take off and league the Cards to another deep postseason run.
THE GAMES YOU CAN’T MISS
March 29: Opening Day!
- For the first time since 1968, every team will open on the same date! Has the Spring Season given us the insight to who will be this year’s top team?
April 10: Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees
- The Yankees are looking absolutely stacked, with their new additions and resigning of CC Sabathia. This rivalry looks to have a new spark that will sure to lead to some fireworks in this first meeting between the two.
April 17: White Sox vs Oakland A’s
- Free Admission Day! Because who doesn’t want to check out a free ball game? Probably a good idea for a team ranked 29th in fan attendance (A’s)
July 6: LA Dodgers vs LA Angels
- Shohei Ohtani had a laugh at himself after being struck out by Clayton Kershaw in spring ball, we’ll see who’s laughing when the Freeway Rivalry gets its’ first 2018 edition.
Aug 3–5: Houston Astros vs Los Angeles Dodgers
- The replay of the 2017 World Series. Somehow both of these teams look just as good as last year, and if they can stay healthy to this point in the season. It’ll be another instant classic.
Sept 30: Regular Season Finale
- The regular season wraps up and we enter the most exciting time of the year. October baseball!
