Haven’t Seen The Director and the Jedi Yet? Time to Remedy That

(Warning! Plenty of spoilers for The Director and the Jedi follow.)

Love or hate Star Wars: The Last Jedi (as if there isn’t an in-between), you ought to watch the documentary about the making of the film, if you haven’t already. (It’s easily obtainable, being on Disney+.)

That’s because director Anthony Wonke and the crew have documented highly interesting things.

When The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson instructs actor Mark Hamill in throwing Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber over his shoulder, it brings back my cringing at the act before realizing that Luke probably wouldn’t have done anything else given the circumstances in which J.J. Abrams put him.

It’s emotional to see Hamill in the lifesize-model Millennium Falcon.

And it’s emotional to see Hamill and Frank Oz reunite — after Hamill was touched after Oz has the Yoda puppet say “young Skywalker.”

A beautiful shot of bricks is pulled back by wires to create the impression that Luke was using the Force to break up a hut (and break up the connection between Kylo Ren and Rey in that hut).
