How Blockchain is revolutionizing gaming: A player perspective

Players have always been accustomed to a centralized game experience, one in which the game creator has complete control over all aspects of the game — Blockchain is rapidly changing this paradigm. Within this article I’ll delve into what benefits a player can expect with a Blockchain based gaming experience.

Ownership of Assets

Currently, gamers’ items don’t belong to them — that asset in your inventory? That’s not actually yours. The creator of the game owns it, stored on a centralized server controlled completely by them. It can be duplicated, stolen, deleted or transferred, all on the whim of the game owner or by a malicious actor who gains access to the centralized server.

Blockchain is changing this paradigm by giving the right of ownership back to the gamer. Safely store assets in your secure cryptocurrency wallet with the confidence that you alone own and control your items. Should the game server be compromised, your items are safe — stored in your wallet and not on someones centralized server.

Even if the game server is taken offline, your items are still yours to use and trade. As talked about later in this article, items purchased in one game can be used in others. When the original game is taken offline, your items are not affected, you own them, completely and indefinitely.

Provable Rarity

How many of a certain item exist? Can more be created? These are the questions that collectors and traders struggle with daily. This causes ultra-rare items to lose their value as more are discovered, or allows more to be produced in the form of reprints.

With the openness of Blockchain, all these questions are easily and transparently answered. With a blockchain explorer you can quickly see how many of a certain type of item have been created, and whether more can be created in the future. No longer will these questions go unanswered. Collectors, players, and traders can rest happy.

This gives game publishers an amazing opportunity to create unique items for their players. Players can be in control of their collections, price them accurately, and can verify in a matter of seconds whether more of an item will be created or if it will remain unique forever.

Item Provenance

Game items don’t have any sort of history attached to them. Which famous players that have owned it, whether it was the first one of its kind in-game or the monsters it has slain. Provenance has the opportunity to create a new class of rare items that imbibe the value of those feats and owners that have come before it.

The Blockchain distributed ledger has the opportunity to give players the freedom to see the history of every item.

Just as baseballs are worth more if they were used in a world series, signed by a player, or if it was a home-run ball; now players can now own items that have been owned by famous streamers or used to kill fantastic beasts.

Cross Game Items

With a set Blockchain-item standard, ERC-721 & similar, items created will no longer be confined to one game. With a universal ledger system that allows players to store items from multiple games in the same wallet, games can now share items and provide a better experience for their players.

CryptoKitties is a great example of how this can be of benefit to players. While the hype has died down, many still have their lovable collectible cats. While the original game may not attract much interest, other games have become part of this “KittyVerse” by allowing the player to bring their CryptoKitty and use it as a pet within another game!
