Disney’s Freedom has ordered a new pilot from Shilpi Roy, the talented filmmaker behind the web series Hipsterhood. Hipsterhood was a modern approach to romantic comedy, exploring what it takes to bring two overly self-aware (slash self-obsessed) hipsters together. The new show, Brown Girls, will focus on the burgeoning friendship between an Indian American aspiring beauty vlogger and a newly-arrived Indian immigrant.

The announcement is especially exciting considering how underrepresented South Asian women are in television. It seems clear that Hipsterhood’s compelling and unique voice laid the foundation for Disney seeing the value in Brown Girls. That’s the beauty of web series; they allow talented groups to create their own visions and distribute them straight to viewers without having to worry about Hollywood’s narrow lens.
