East WillyB

Brooklyn means a lot of things to a lot of people. It used to mean Biggie. Now it means artisanal food shops. Is one more valid than another? Perhaps. But people also seem really into cheese. East WillyB is about a gentrifying Brooklyn neighborhood trying to come to terms with the shifts in neighborhood demographics, as the traditionally-Hispanic community gets pushed out by yoga studios, six dollar Coronas and hipsters up in arms about gentrification (ironically, irony isn’t a strong suite). The argument is framed by two warring bars in Bushwick, one welcoming change, the other attempting to retrench. The highlights of the show are the comically manic characters, each with their own agenda that effectively highlights the intersectionality involved in these conversations.

Sassy Gay Friend

In the early 2000s, Queer Eye introduced the ridiculous and offensive idea that gay men could be spirit animals for the slobs among us, teaching us how to eat, dress and live our best lives. This series from Second City mocks that persistent trope by interjecting a sassy gay friend into scenes from classic literature (Romeo and Juliet, Othello, etc). As a testament to the power of the stereotype, it turns out you can steer famously-misguided youths down the right path if you just apply enough cheeky attitude to the problem. If only it were this simple in real life.

The Agent

A case of mistaken identities, a tax agent falls in love with an aspiring actress who walks into his office and thinks he’s a film talent agent to the stars. The agent, smitten by the woman, first goes to great lengths to live the lie. But, as can only be expected, it eventually blows up in his face. The show is quietly hilarious, with the confidence to rely on the strength of the dialogue, a cast who can hold the audience’s attention (the first episode only features one speaking actor, though you don’t realize it), and awkward situations. Meet-cutes can be hard to pull off and this one does an impressive job of sticking the landing.
