In this week's “StarList”, Jakub Jurových tells us what his favorite online course on machine learning is and why developers should stay up until late at night.

StarList is a short questionnaire by StarLift, in which successful Czech and Slovak developers share their tips and advice.

What people do you follow on Twitter (or other social media)?

Steli Efti to keep my sales hustle up, Andrej Karpathy for great explanation of new developments in machine learning, Bret Victor for inspiration, and Elon Musk and SpaceX cos frickin’ rockets.

What sources do you use for self-education?

There are a few newsletters that I subscribe to: Business Insider and Launch Ticker’s Top 20 Stories of the Week are great, for example.

HackerNews is another great source of high-quality and very technical content. One just needs to be careful when reading it, it’s very easy to end up in a startup bubble.

Online courses are great! There are two on Coursera that I highly recommend: Andrew Ng’s Machine Learning and Model Thinking by the University of Michigan.

What events in Czechia and Slovakia would you recommend to developers?

Most hackathons are a great place to learn and meet smart people. Conferences are great, but I usually skip the talks and try to talk to as many as possible instead.

After all, if I want to learn about something, I read about it. While events are helpful, there’s no substitute for staying up alone until late night, learning something by yourself.

What is your life/work motto?

Nothing complicated, I just try to take every opportunity to learn something new.
