Tips for Speakers

Here is a quick list of tips for all of you who speak at StarsConf (see below for Spanish translation):

• We strongly suggest you test the display and sound (if it applies) before your talk, in the same room you are scheduled. You can do it during the mornings (8:00–8:45) or at the start of the break before the block you are scheduled to participate.
• Connection to the displays is via HDMI. We have Mac adapters (mini display port and USB-C). If you are on the rooms Fresno or Magna the aspect ratio is 16:9. Other rooms are 4:3.
• Please be at the stage at least 5 minutes before the scheduled time of your talk. If you aren’t, we’ll start rolling the plan B for missing speaker.
• If you only speak English, remember there is a volunteer in the organization assigned to help you. He can be more than your translator: if you need help with anything ask him for help and he will do his best to do it. Or he will forward it to the whole organization team if needed.
• If you speak Spanish, feel free to approach anyone from the organization team (you will recognize them by the colored t-shirts with the StarsConf logo they are wearing) for help with anything you need.
• You are encouraged to present using your own computer. Still: please send your slides using link Liliana Reyes provided by email. That enable us to have a backup computer if something is wrong with yours. And if you are scheduled on the Fresno room, those slides will improve the quality of the streaming video and the quality of the real-time translation.
• Please be mindful of time. We run a very packed schedule so there is literally no room for going over time. Running your talk on time in the 25 or 45 minutes assigned to you shows respect for the next speaker and also for people attending the conference (who can switch from one track to another as long as we keep them in sync). We’ll help you with visual signs when there is 5 minutes left, 2 minutes left and 0 minutes left. If continue beyond the point we won’t be able to open the Q&A section for your talk, which is a shame. And if you continue beyond the time originally allocated for Q&A, we will have to cut you off 😓.
• Also please be mindful of the code of conduct. Many people will look at you as an example to follow.
• If you need anything related to the talk itself, the presenter and the volunteer in charge of your room (easily identified by the green t-shirt with the StarsConf logo) are your main points of contact.
• Your talk will likely be recorded. If you prefer us to not do that, just tell the volunteer in charge of your room .
• If something goes wrong at the moment you are about to start, don’t panic. The presenter and the person in charge of the room will be right there to help you sort any problem. If the problem is on us, we’ll figure out a way to give your talk the time it originally had.
• We recommend you to hang out on the breaks and drink-up after your talk. People will want to know more about you, your experience, and the topic you talked about. And you might also learn one thing or two on those exchanges.

Last but not least: Thank you so much all of you for coming to the conference sharing your experiences and your knowledge in such a generous way. We run this conference with the firm belief that this kind of sharing help us not only personally as professionals who want to do things better, but also as a collective to move things forwards bit by bit. You all make that possible.

• Te recomendamos mucho probar la proyección y el sonido (si corresponde) antes de tu charla, en la misma sala que está programada tu aparición. Lo puedes hacer durante las mañanas (8:00–8:45) o al comienzo del break antes del bloque en que está programada tu participación
• La conexión para la proyección es vía HDMI. Tenemos adaptadores para Mac(mini display port y USB-C). Si te corresponde en las salas Fresno o Magna el ratio de aspecto es 16:9. Las otras salas son 4:3.
• Por favor preséntate en el escenario de tu sala 5 minutos antes de la hora planificada para tu charla. Si no estás, empezaremos a hacer funcionar el plan B para cuando falta un expositor.
• Si sólo hablas inglés, habrías leído la versión de más arriba, por lo que no traduciré este punto :D.
• Si hablas español, siéntete libre de acercarte a cualquier persona del equipo organizador (los reconocerás por las poleras de colores con el logo de la StarsConf) para ayuda con lo que sea que necesites.
• Te recomendamos a presentar usando tu propio computador. Aún así: por favor envía tus slides usando el link que Liliana Reyes indicó mediante un email. Eso nos permite tener un computador de backup si algo sale mal con el tuyo. Y si estás en la sala Fresno, esos slides mejorarán la calidad del video en streaming y la calidad de la traducción en tiempo real.
• Por favor sé consciente del tiempo. Tenemos una agenda súper apretada, y literalmente no hay espacio para pasarnos de lo planificado. Hacer tu exposición en los 25 o 45 minutos asignados muestra respeto por el siguiente expositor y también por la audiencia (quienes pueden cambiarse de un track a otro siempre y cuando los mantenemos en sincronía). Te ayudaremos con señales visuales cuando te queden 5 minutos, 2 minutos y 0 minutos. Si continúas más allá, no podremos hacer la parte de preguntas del público, lo que será una pena. Y si continúas más allá del tiempo originalmente asignado a preguntas, tendremos que cortar abruptamente tu charla 😓.
• También por favor sé consciente del código de coducta. Mucha gente te verá como un ejemplo a seguir.
• Si necesitas cualquier cosa relacionada con tu charla, el presentador y el voluntario a cargo de tu sala (fácilmente identificable por la polera verde con el logo de la StarsConf) son tus puntos de contacto principal.
• Tu charla muy probablemente será grabada. Si prefieres que no lo hagamos, sólo indícalo al voluntario a cargo de tu sala.
• Si algo sale mal cuando estás a punto de comenzar, no entres en pánico. El presentador y el encargado de sala estarán inmediatamente allí para ayudarte. Si el problema es nuestra responsabilidad, encontraremos una forma en que puedas hacer tu exposición en el tiempo que originalmente tenías.
• Te recomendamos quedarte y compartir en los breaks y drink-up después de tu charla. La gente querrá saber más de tí, tu experiencia y el tema sobre el que hablaste. Y también podrías aprender una cosa o dos en esas conversaciones.

Por último pero no menos importante: Muchísimas gracias a todos ustedes por venir a la conferencia a compartir sus experiencias y su conocimiento de manera tan generosa. Hacemos esta conferencia con la firme creencia que compartir este tipo de cosas nos ayudan no solo en lo personal como profesionales que aspiran a hacer mejor las cosas, sino también como un colectivo que hacemos que las cosas progresen poco a poco.
