In a 2019 study by MetLife, “benefits customized to meet employee needs” ranked among the Top Five Drivers of Happiness at Work. In the same study, 76% of respondents agreed that employers have a responsibility for the health and well-being of their employees. This number has been steadily increasing since 2015.

Employee expectations are changing, and when you take into consideration the unemployment rate fell to 3.6% in April (the lowest it’s been since ‘69), it’s easy to see why employers are getting creative with their perks. To attract and retain employees in a competitive market, compelling benefits are crucial.

Benefits and perks have changed drastically over the last century.

It wasn’t long before workplace water coolers evolved into free coffee and tea. Soon, the “fully stocked kitchen” perk became catered lunches for employees and, in extreme cases, in-office chefs. When discounts to local gyms were no longer cutting it, companies raised the bar by offering fully subsidized memberships, topped off by spa services and Fitbits.

At Cherry, we’re building a platform that lets employees take company perks into their own hands. Each employee is given a budget and access to a marketplace where they can create a perk package customized to meet their needs.

Along the way, we’ve learned of the 100+ unique benefits companies offer today, so we decided to create the Perk Generator. Our list includes everything from the standard free snacks and swag to fresh and impactful perks like pawternity leave and gender reassignment assistance.

Here are some that stood out to us:

  1. Hinge’s $200 monthly date stipend
  2. Zillow’s breast-milk shipping benefit for nursing mothers who are traveling for work
  3. Twitter’s onsite acupuncture and improv classes

As the lines between work and life continue to blur, employers are thinking carefully about how they can use benefits to strengthen culture and create desirable environments. With the Perk Generator, decision makers can see how other companies are using perks to stand out to candidates.

The Perk Generator is live on our website. You can “heart” a perk to like it. We’ll be publishing a list of the most liked perks next.
