However, there’s a darker side to compromise that can lead to suboptimal outcomes, best encapsulated by the adage, “A camel is a horse designed by a committee.” This witty remark highlights the pitfalls of design by consensus, where the result is a creature (or product) that, while functional, lacks the elegance, efficiency, and purpose of what was initially envisioned.

Compromise, in its essence, is about making concessions. It’s the art of finding a middle ground where conflicting interests or ideas meet. In personal relationships or diplomatic endeavours, compromise is often the cornerstone of harmony and understanding. However, when it comes to innovation, design, and product development, compromise can become a double-edged sword.

The danger lies in the dilution of ideas.   • Focusing on the User: Ultimately, the best arbiter of a decision should be the value it provides to the end user. When decisions are made with the user’s needs and experiences in mind, it becomes easier to filter out changes that dilute the core value proposition.
