Dr. Oz: Surgeon, Professor, Author, and TV Personality
If you have ever watched day time television or researched anything about health you probably have run across the name Dr. Oz. Mehmet Oz , is a Turkish-American cardiothoracic surgeon and a professor at Colombia University, as well as an author and television personality. Dr. Oz first came to the limelight with his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2004 and later on Larry King Live. In 2009, the Dr. Oz show came to daily television. This show focused on medical issues and personal health and was launched by Winfrey’s Harpo Productions and Sony Pictures.
Dr. Oz was originally born in Cleveland Ohio, his parents immigrated from Konya Providence, Turkey. His father earned scholarships that allowed him to emigrate to the United States as a medical resident, paving the way for his young son. Dr. Oz received his undergraduate degree at Harvard University, and he received his MD and MBA at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Penn’s Wharton School of Business.
One of the most interesting things about Dr. Oz is that he is known for his support of alternative medicine. He has been criticized by physicians, government officials and publications that include Popular Science and The New Yorker, for giving non-scientific advice.
As far as his television and film appearances, he appeared on The Oprah Winfrey show for 5 seasons. His Transplant! television series won both a Freddie and Silver Telly award. He currently hosts The Dr. Oz show on television and talk show on Sirius XM Radio. Further in his career he has been chosen several times as one of the most influential people. Time Magazine ranked Oz as 44th on its list of “100 Most Influential People in 2008”. He was also named one of “The Harvard 100 Most Influential Alumni”.
