One of the most prolific speakers at the UN World Data Forum happening this week is Shaida Badiee, Managing Director and Co-founder of Open Data Watch, an international, nonprofit organization that promotes data openness and completeness.

Shaida Badiee has extensive experience in the field of data and development. At the World Bank , she established its Development Data Group in 1995 and then led this group for nearly 20 years. In addition to founding Open Data Watch, Badiee has worked on a range of initiatives, including the Data2X partnership focused on improving gender data, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network Thematic Research Network on Data and Statistics (SDSN TReNDS), and the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data (GPSDD). She has written numerous thought leadership articles covering the topics of data for development, open data, and the importance of data in achieving the SDGs. Some of her more recent content can be found on the Open Data Watch website.

Badiee emphasizes the importance of not just collecting data but also making it accessible to all users. She highlights the need for infrastructure investment to build up essential, underlying data systems. This transparency will strengthen public trust, increase equity in service delivery, and ultimately improve human rights to create a more equal society.

Given that these beliefs are also fundamental to StartingUpGood’s mission, we are particularly interested in Badiee’s insights. In addition to the opening press conference, Badiee is participating in these seven panels:
