At Startmate, we are well-known for boosting the ambition of the founders and operators that come through our programs. In 2021, we are doing this for ourselves as we almost triple the size of our team, expand our office in Victoria and officially get boots on the ground in New Zealand!

Here is a snapshot of what we will be up to in 2021:

With the expansion of our Accelerator and Fellowship programs and the introduction of our First Believers investor program, we are adding six new full-time team members — five in Victoria, one in New Zealand. Applicants will need to be based in these regions or be willing to relocate.

Start date is asap. We’ll be reviewing applications in January, interviewing in February with the goal of extending offers in the first week of March.

We use an anonymous, unbiased hiring process which will ask you to answer a few problem questions instead of submitting a CV. If successful, you will be invited to a first-round interview.

What is Startmate?

Startmate is the centre of startup gravity in Australia and New Zealand.

At our core, we’re a community of the most ambitious founders, operators and investors built on seamless, deserved trust. That high density of ambition coupled with success pulls in more awesome people into our orbit.

The community revolves around three core pillars

  1. Founders — our Accelerator
  2. Operators — our Fellowship for women, students and engineers
  3. Investors — our First Believers program

The Accelerator helps Founders scale their businesses from the first dollar to hundreds of millions.

The Fellowship empowers Operators to take a leap into a startup.

The First Believers program gives an insight view into startup investing.

Startmate Culture

What you might love working at Startmate:

  • The Startmate community is a unique mix of founders, operators and investors — the one thing everyone has in common is ambition
  • You will have very high autonomy to realise your dreams within your area
  • We work with a hospitality mindset front of mind with consistently high NPS for all of our programs of 70+
  • Startmate is much more than just our team, it’s a community built on paying it forward
  • Our mission is to increase startups chances to succeed. With that as your north star, you can experiment and launch initiatives within Startmate in a matter of hours.
  • We are a remote-first team with coverage across Sydney, Melbourne, Newcastle, Noosa and New Zealand.
  • You get to work with every well known and less well-known Australian and Kiwi startup, VC and angel — Canva, Safety Culture, Propeller, Vend, Xero, Blackbird, Square Peg, AirTree, rampersand, Tempus Partners — you name it.

What you might hate working at Startmate:

  • We’re a small startup ourselves. We’re a team of 4 FTE scaling to 10 FTE by March. We’ve never done this before and will be making lots of mistakes along the way.
  • We won’t handhold you. You’ll be given full autonomy and most processes and systems will be put in place by yourself. You’ll also have to dig through our google drive to find the right resources.
  • We are comfortable with chaos. Things move so quickly at Startmate, that you will find out things last minute, we’ll be coming up with things on the fly and not everything will work out.
  • We are feedback addicted. We collect feedback from our founders, operators, investors and team consistently and action it immediately. It sometimes hurts in the moment, but is what helps us be customer-first in the long term.

Role Details

Outreach and Investment roles

1. Events & Outreach Associate — based in Victoria — Apply here by 10th Jan

You will be owning Startmate’s holistic outreach and events plan. You’ll be in charge of telling our alumni stories across the Accelerator, Fellowships and First Believers. Create a regular newsletter, socials (Twitter, LinkedIn etc) cadence and manage our website.

You also love organising events, both internally and externally. Internal events can be from 10–100 people events either in person or remotely. Our external events culminate in twice-yearly Demo Days of 600+ in-person events with a virtual component.

2. Community & Partnerships Associate — based in NZ — Apply here by 13th Jan

You will be responsible for opening up new pathways into Startmate through partnerships with existing partners (accelerators, coworking spaces, VCs, etc), but also create new partnerships to find ambitious founders, operators and investors, specifically with a lens on New Zealand.

This role will also be responsible for running a systematic way for Founders, Fellows and Investors to get exposed to Startmate through re-designing our Office Hours initiative.

This role has an investment element to it, the sense that you will be 60% focused on finding ambitious founders in New Zealand and Australia and supporting Lauren in follow-on funding post-Startmate Accelerator

3. Investor Associate — based in Victoria — Apply here by 24th Jan

This is not an investing role per se, but a role exposing you to investment thinking. You will be designing and managing the First Believers program to expose a group of 20–100 First Believers per cohort to startup opportunities and the best investors and founders.

You have a curiosity to understand Founders and are able to tell their story. A big part of the job will be consolidating information about Founders and their Startups in a digestible format for First Believers to build their investment thesis. You are able to consolidate large amounts of information into a succinct format for First Believers to seamlessly reflect on their past choices.

Your north star will be to build First Believers’ confidence to write their first startup cheque.

Fellowship roles

4. Talent Community Associate — based in Victoria — Apply here by 17th Jan

You’re making dreams come true. Matching exceptional people with upcoming needs and roles of rocketship startups. The ideal candidate for this role has direct experience with recruitment — either in Talent / HR or as a hiring manager — and is excited to spend a significant portion of their time coaching individuals toward their next roles.

60% of your job is to help ambitious operators navigate their career and get jobs at startups (primarily Startmate alumni)!

40% of your time will be spent attracting and directly reaching out to ambitious Fellows (Women, Student, Engineers) and soon-to-be Founders.

5. Student Fellowship Associate — based in Victoria — Apply here by 20th Jan

Your role is to make startups a real career path for students. You are the voice of startups to give students a peek behind the curtain. On the flip side, you are the students’ biggest advocate to startups, removing barriers and increasing confidence to offer internships and to hire.

You will run 2x two-week Fellowships for universities x 100 students in the Summer and Winter holidays. The programs will be designed to give students and startups maximum exposure and confidence to hire.

Off the back of the Fellowship program, you will manage students’ internship experiences and pave the pathway to get hired by a startup.

6. Program Operations Associate — based in Victoria — Apply here by 27th Jan

A community-orientated engineer, with a knack for synthesising systems and tools to enable people to have extraordinary experiences.

You love building on no- or low-code tools like Zapier, Notion, Airtable, etc. Bonus: if you can connect systems through APIs.

Most importantly — you understand engineers and love working with them.

You will be creating the holistic Startmate infrastructure. Where should things live? How do they fit together and flow through? How do we create a people directory and a member’s login area (ie on Squarespace)?

You will also be thinking through and designing a Fellowship for Engineers. What would Engineers want to get out of a program? What does the program look like? Lastly, you will run the program :)

Join the Startmate Team — that’s all of us!
