Some of the Thought Behind the Pledge Logo

The story of the logo for The Startup Diversity and Inclusion Pledge starts with the generosity of Wallon Walusayi of 3Data.io. Wallon’s passion for diversity led him to donate the services of his company’s terrific designer Sean Loughran, who developed the really terrific pledge logo.

While the logo is clean and simple, Sean put some real thought behind its design, colors and shape.

Design

The logo’s hand has several meanings. The most obvious is that, when you take a pledge, you hold your hand up by your shoulder. But, you also indicate you want something to stop by holding your palm out at arms length. An underlying aspect of the pledge is to help stop past approaches to building companies and start a more conscious approach to building diverse teams and inclusive culture.

Colors

The colors of the logo are intended to evoke several things, while not being too explicit:

  • Skin tone, to reflect racial diversity.
  • Feminine colors, to reflect gender diversity.
  • The rainbow flag of the LGBTQ community, to reflect diversity of sexual orientation.

Shape

Finally, the feminine curves of the hand are also meant to reinforce the idea of gender diversity.

A special thanks goes out to Wallon for his generosity and support and Sean for creating a terrific logo for the pledge.
