With little experience as 8 months in a company as a Software Engineer, I’ve learn a lot of things that self research couldn’t teach. I used to believe that a company is a separate entity from people, carried on shoulders of some people for their needs while achieving an objective decided by the people who started it. And as for the people who worked in the company had little to no direct influence to this so called objective.
This is a seriously wrong way of seeing things. But now I understand that, an organization is nothing but people and collective identity. The motto or the objective of the organization is the weighted average of the people who associate themselves with the company.
This might imply that a company’s objective are too volatile as compared to that of an individual since it is just a weighted aggregate of its associates. Then again, the kind of people who associate themselves with the company or the group would look for the matching traits so that they can relate their passion with the companies passion. And since the people who join the company have a common interest, the motto or the direction of the company remains stable.
I have mentioned the term “weighted” many times. Where does this parameter come from, how is it calculated and how does it affect the company’s objective. With every individual or sub-organization that joins the organization, they will receive a certain amount of credibility. A certain amount of respect to their opinions and ideals. This certain amount is mostly decided by the level of contribution the individual or the sub-organization is doing to the parent organization. The higher your position, greater the respect for your ideals.
Now, that seems logical, but, there is a catch to it. The weight that you carry for your ideas is decided collectively by ideals of the most influential people in the organization. Regardless of decision, everyone wont be completely happy with what they get. Since this weightage is an average of everyone’s interest, it can never be in perfect alignment with your interest. You either compromise your ideas a little and continue with your job as long as your goals are satisfied or your choose to quit and look for a new association(by selecting/creating).
This one concept of collective motto is what drives an individual as well as the company formed by association.
