Measuring time is tricky

A lot of people ask me how do I get all my work done on time and so fast, and how I find a balance between designing and the rest of my life. I am going to share my formula for organizing every day of my life.

People generally think about time in terms of hours, day, months, and years. Should we really be measuring how we spend our time this way? I don’t think so. Here is why:

It’s a mind a trap

If you measure time by common sense it’s not going to show you a clear picture of your life. Let’s have a look on this illustration. During your life you are going to follow this line (not equal for everyone).

  • 0–18 Basic Learning Curve
  • 18–40 Most productive part of you life
  • 40–60 Decreasing of your activity
  • 60 — * Lower Activity

This is how you should see your life. By keeping this in mind, you be way better able to keep pushing you to limits, because you won’t fall into the trap of thinking you have hours, months, years — or rather, an infinite period of time — to complete a task.

You’ll be hyper-aware of how limited your time is.

No matter what you do keep this in mind, and make sure that you do you business, stay with your family, or travel all over the world.

I run the design team at Toptal, where we work at a very high pace to complete a large volume of UI/UX deliverables on time while never sacrificing quality.
