Electric vehicles are vehicles that are powered by electric power instead of an internal combustion engine. They can either be dependent completely or partially on electric power. They have a very low running cost and are environment friendly as they do not use a combustion engine so little to no fossil fuel is used by the car. Most electric vehicles run solely on electric power and are run by battery-powered engines, but many are partially dependent on electric power which means they can utilize both sources of energy that is electric power and fossil fuels.

MAJOR BRANDS THAT MANUFACTURE ELECTRIC CARS

Although every big vehicle brand is trying to dip their hands in this amazing invention, some famous brands that are making new electric vehicles are:

  • Tesla
  • Volkswagen
  • Aspark
  • Audi
  • BMW
  • Bollinger
  • Cadillac
  • Chevrolet

Tesla is the biggest and leading electric vehicle manufacturer in the world and the first company to perfect an electric vehicle design. The German Volkswagen comes in second.

Rivian automotive, Lucid Motors, Lordstown Motors, Nikola, Fisker, Canoo, NIO, Li Auto, XPeng, Faraday & Future, Arrival Ltd. These eleven EV startups are chasing Tesla.

ADVANTAGES OF USING ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Electric vehicles are taking over the world as it provides huge benefits to their users compared to combustion engine vehicles.

Some of the benefits of using battery-electric vehicles are:

  • Electric vehicles have a very low running cost as they have fewer running parts than other vehicles. Less running parts hence less maintenance.
  • The vehicles are environmentally friendly because they do not use fossil fuels. Instead, a rechargeable battery is used. Previously a lead ion or nickel-metal hydride battery was used but now a lithium-ion battery is used more often.
  • The car creates little to no sound.
  • It costs around £7.8 to fully recharge a car. It is more than enough for a moderate journey. But very long plus journeys that require climbing might again need a recharge.
  • The vehicles do not require exhausts, clutches, spark plugs, or gear.

Electric cars are the future. These vehicles are the biggest invention of recent times. There is no doubt the world will shift to electric vehicles in a very short time. With the recent advancements in this field, Tesla playing the biggest role, and the low cost with more and better features of a petrol engine car, people cannot resist but to switch to electric vehicles.

EV PRODUCTION IN TAIWAN

On the back of the rising popularity of electric vehicles and the island’s solid base in information communication technology (ICT), Taiwanese traditional electronic manufacturers or startups are encouraged to enter the market by producing EV components and systems. Currently, Taiwan is an integral part of the global EV supply chain, and even the industry dominant, Tesla, relies heavily on Taiwanese suppliers for the majority of their EV parts. These manufacturers are working vigorously on the five main systems of electric vehicles, including motors, reducers, batteries, on-board chargers, and electric power control units. With prominent technologies used in modern EVs from Taiwan, some might question whether it is possible to have its own MIT electric vehicle. The tech giant and global leader of smart manufacturing, Foxconn, has launched the MIH open platform in 2020 for EV development, which allows different Taiwanese EV components producers and startups to collaborate. Foxconn has also designed and debuted 3 self-developed electric vehicle models, one of which has hit the road this March. James Huang, chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), says that it is imperative for Taiwan to come up with its own brand, and time is of the essence.

THE TAIWAN FIASCO

An electric car is manufactured somewhat differently than a normal vehicle, well at least the electric bit of it. Just like the PC industry, the main manufacturers of all the circuitry in the automobile industry are located in Taiwan. Currently, there is a global shortage of silicon, which is why the manufacturing of electric vehicles has taken a dent since the computers and chips to be installed in these vehicles are being manufactured at an extremely slow rate so you will have to keep that in mind if you are looking for a start-up in this industry. Though, the potential is limitless.

SUMMARY

Electric mobility is on the rise and is without a doubt the future of transport. These cars are better than petrol or diesel engine in almost every aspect. They are much more environmentally friendly and much less costly. But obviously, there is still room for improvement; for example, the range is not that great which makes them not reliable for longer journeys, and consequently, can cause anxiety or ruin plans. Plus, the shortage of silicon needs to be addressed as most of petrol cars are going to be replaced by electric cars.
