Ford v Tesla? Who Will Win?

Move over Enzo Ferrari, Ford’s next battle is against Elon Musk

To promote the launch of Tesla’s new Cybertruck, Elon Musk staged a challenge between a lightweight, six-cylinder, rear-wheel drive Ford F-150 and the most powerful three engine version of his Cybertruck. It wasn’t even close — the Cybertruck won. But was the challenge fair? Most people don’t think so including scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson who took to Twitter to voice their displeasure. The Cybertruck won’t actually ship until 2022 at the earliest so we’ve got a few minutes to discuss the issue. Full disclosure — I put my pre-order for the Cybertruck in this week and I already own a Ford F-250.

The truth is that Elon Musk pulled a fast one. If Tesla was looking for an apples-to-apples comparison they would have compared the Cybertruck to the Ford F-250. They come with similar trim and are priced almost identically $40–70K based on options. The reason Musk didn’t was simple — the most powerful Cybertruck’s towing capacity is less than the least powerful F-250.

When I began shopping for my truck I needed something that could pull a six horse gooseneck trailer. The trailer alone weighted 9,720 lbs. Add in horses and tack and the weight will approach 16,000 lbs. The Ford F-150 that Elon pitted against his Cybertruck has a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 lbs and couldn’t even safely pull the trailer empty. I ended up going with the Ford F-250 4x4 with a 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel with a towing capacity of 16,400 lbs. Elon’s Cybertruck has a towing capacity of 14,000 lbs. — a couple of thousand pounds shy of what I need to haul my polo ponies. Oh, and it isn’t clear one could even mount a gooseneck in the back of the Cybertruck.

At the end of the day, comparing the Cybertruck to any ‘truck’ is a false equivalency. The Cybertruck isn’t really a truck. It is actually an off-road performance vehicle. The truth is that most of us don’t use our trucks to trailer our horses everyday — instead we use them to get to the barn to ride them (farm roads can wreak havoc on your Maserati). The Cybertruck is the PERFECT vehicle to get to the barn in style while giving you the option of having a little off-road fun while you’re there. So what about the challenge? Forget about it — comparing the F-250 and Cybertruck is like comparing apples and oranges. Get both…
