Earlier this month Peter Csathy recommended that Netflix purchase Laemmle Theaters — a small 41 screen chain in Los Angeles. His thesis was that by taking the OTT company into the physical world a true 360-degree customer engagement strategy would be possible. His argument is sound and I think he may be onto something but I can’t help but think buying Laemmle would be a waste of time. If Netflix wants to go 360-degree they’re going to need a chain with more than 11,000 screens in more than 1,000 locations. Turns out that AMC, the largest movie theater chain in the United States, would be the perfectly sized platform for a 360-degree strategy. With more than $5B cash on hand Netflix could easily afford to buy AMC with a current market capitalization of $1.2B. Thoughts?
