Why I love Mark Cuban
Almost as much as I dislike him…
Mark Cuban is the most approachable billionaire on the planet. I’ve personally emailed him several times and each time received a thoughtful response. I am constantly surprised by stories from startup founders about how accessible he is. For example, this afternoon I was reading the following question on Quora: “What is it like to have Mark Cuban as an investor in your startup?” One of the answers was from a founder that appeared on Shark Tank and received an investment offer from Mark Cuban. The entrepreneur initially shared his story anonymously and much to my surprise one of the comments to his answer was from Mark Cuban. The original answer was fairly critical of Cuban and yet Cuban’s response was measured and helpful. The entrepreneur responded using his real name and to my surprise Cuban responded again. The entire exchange was refreshing and my respect for Cuban couldn’t help but be bolstered. You can read it here.
I recently read Professor Marc I. Steinberg’s book on Mark’s fight with the SEC titled, The Securities and Exchange Commission v. Cuban — A Trial of Insider Trading (ISBN 978–1–94607–4249), where he describes the SEC’s efforts to prove that Cuban engaged in illegal insider trading. The book is fascinating in that it includes Cuban’s deposition and trial testimony — Mark is classic Mark — and once again my respect for the man only grew after I finished it.
My biggest issue with Cuban are his attacks on Republicans and conservative political positions. His attacks on President Trump are the most hypocritical — especially given the fact that he is considering running against him. All of the issues that Democrats have used against Trump can more easily be levied against Mark. Don’t be surprised, if he runs, when charges of racism, sexism, sexual assault, sexual harassment are made against him — none of which will be true — but they’ll be made nonetheless. At the end of day Mark Cuban is one of those interesting people you can’t ignore — nor should you.
