Looking for a new challenge? The perfect backdrop for launching a career, or a vibrant city that will bring your startup job to life? Many factors go into the decision-making process when it comes to finding the right job. From our experience, job-seekers will contemplate locations that offer the most hours of ‘tantastic’ sunlight, the most ‘green spaces’ and parks, or the mouth-watering experiences of gastronomic indulgence.

Around 18 cities, and more than 800 companies later, we started wondering what it is that makes Tyba’s startups the sexiest in Europe, and what makes job-seekers tick. We asked ourselves: “What if we were looking to work in a startup in any city in Europe? Which factors would we want to keep in mind?” We dug deep — real deep — only to realize that the best people to answer these questions, are Tyba’s job-seekers themselves.

Without further ado here’s a ‘snackable’ infographic of the top six factors Tyba users take into account when deciding on their Startup city. Grab a piece of paper, a pen, and maybe a map, and lets get started.

1. General Quality of Life

We’ve crunched the numbers away to reveal what matters to the modern job seeker when deciding on their Startup City. And what we found is nothing short of surprising and positive for those seeking employment in today’s markets.

Winning by a landslide, the modern job seeker keeps their General Quality Of Life in mind when deciding on ‘the big move’. May it be in Berlin, Madrid, Paris or Amsterdam, to namedrop a few, our users showed us that they’ve got it together when it comes to moving for a job abroad, measuring cities based on how well the inhabitants fare.

2. Average Costs of Rent

Pent house in Champs-Élysées or apartment in the heart of Milan, job seekers take into account the average costs of their allocations when deciding which city to move to. Average costs of rent makes some of Europe’s cities more affordable for job seekers, attracting the best talents to their borders. Today’s job seekers prove to be both, smart and savvy, when it comes to balancing out their personal spendings with their startup life.

3. Average City Salary

That penthouse on the banks of the Rhine will definitely need some financing, that is why job seekers take into account the city’s average salary before ‘crossing the pond’. Housing and rent is becoming a very hot topic when it comes to folks in tech. They swap tips and tricks and even discuss the viability of a career in certain locations on a regular basis.

4. Availability of Public Transport

Commuting is never fun — unless it’s part of your daily workout plan- that is why job seekers get informed about a city’s availability of public transport before saying “I do” to their dream startup job. Just under half of the job-seekers that answered our survey agreed that good tram-bus-subway connections are always a plus when it comes to saving some hours or minutes on the way to and back from work.

5. Hours of Sunlight

Sunny days are an absolute must. All things aside, today’s job seeker takes into account the number of sun hours they get per day. With the flexible hours, and work hard play hard startup attitudes, a healthy dose of sunshine puts some color on the skin and a smile on everyone’s faces. After work drinks, and unconventional office perks are always more fun under the sun.

6. Availability of International Flights

Just under half of the applicants surveyed agreed that good flight connections, and affordable airport transportation is a must-have when thinking of their Startup City. The good news is that a lot of European cities have excellent flight programs and airport transport arrangements, which come in handy for all those weekend-getaways.

Although these factors are definitely part of the decision-making mix, we find that talent will ‘make the move’ for a job if the work is exciting enough, balancing out any other factors of concern.
