Interview with David Boyd, Co-Founder of Kickback Australia

Tell us about Kickback Australia. What do you do?

We are a cashback business. Brands offer us commission to promote them on our website and we share that commission with our users to incentivize them to shop through our partner brands.

What is your startup’s origin story?

We were running a financial comparison website and saw a strong synergy between credit products and the retail side of the cashback business. The cashback model has been validated with success in other countries so we wanted to try it out here in Australia.

Were you involved in the industry before this startup?

We were involved with online business in the form of financial comparison website Finty (previously Credit Card Compare). We are new to the retail industry but have experience in the affiliate space.

Take us through a day in your life. What does the typical day look like?

I am involved in Finty, Kickback and also a Tiny House company too so my days are quite busy. I will chat with my teams in the morning to make sure there is nothing holding them back and then spend the afternoon working hard. Evenings are spent with my wife and kids.

What has been the most challenging part of growing your company?

COVID-19 has involved challenges with the team getting used to working from home and communicating effectively.

What has been your best marketing channel? What are some channels you are looking to explore next?

For acquisition we have run competitions and directed traffic to them via paid advertising on Facebook. For purchases email marketing has been a strong driver.

What apps do you use that you would recommend to others?

Slack, Asana, Trello, Hootsuite, Google Meet.

Do you have a book, podcast, or Youtube channel you would recommend to other Entrepreneurs?

Chillhop Music is what I play when I am trying to concentrate.

What are your short-term and long-term goals for your company?

Short-term we are looking to onboard some great partner brands and increase our user base. Long-term we are looking to scale the business to have a large active user base.

If you could go back in time to the day you founded your company, what advice would you give yourself?

Don’t wait for everything to be perfect, just get it going and improve the website according to user feedback.
