Kypseli’s Market Project : Agora

How we began?

During the course of the ADandPR Lab’s Start Up Lab of Panteion University we were presented with 4 projects. After evaluating the ideas we chose the one that had to do with Social Innovation and Urban Togetherness known as Kypseli’s Market Project.

This project was held by the organisation “Athens Impact Hub” and our challenge was to improve the current situation that Kypseli has at the moment.

Our first thought was that we had to take some insights in order to find out what is happening in Kypseli these days. What’s better way than to take some interviews from the locals.

Solution

After interviewing several people we noticed that one of the main issues in the area of Kypseli is the interaction among the diverse groups living there. More specifically the locals sense that Kypseli has the feeling of “a big city, not a neighbourhood”.

So, after brainstorming we thought that the best way to bring people together is through art and culture. Our main idea was to create a collaboration of theatres in the area of Kypseli. The theatres will be a meeting point for the residents of Kypseli and the surrounding areas, aiming to spark a fruitful interaction among those people.

To make this happen we came up with the idea of a festival that will last for a week, twice a year with various theatrical shows for every day. To ensure the equal involvement of everyone, after communicating and agreeing with the individual theatre owner, the institution of “Εισιτήριο σε αναμονή” / “ Ticket on hold” will take place (For every full priced ticket, the person buying it, has the option to buy another one for half the price. The half priced ticket will be available for those who can’t afford a ticket at all — unemployed, students, the elderly etc.). At the beginning of the festival a big party in and around the Market of Kypseli will take place, where everyone will have the option to bring homemade food and drinks and interact with each other.

Finishing Words

After this project came to an end, stepping back and reviewing our thought process we noticed that there were some difficulties that were not easy to overcome. We tried our best to figure out a solution best suitable for Kypseli’s needs. We need to point out that Kypseli is a special place for some of our team members and this is the reason why we put our whole to it. It was a great experience and using our creativity to help others can be so fulfilling.
