Marble AR :

Taking live performances to the next level.

--

Augmented reality (AR) is the technology which allows an interactive experience of the physical world with added digital information to it. Currently AR apps are becoming the next big thing, offering a variety of service from business and education to gaming and entertainment… And therefore music! With the music applications blooming in the market, startups that combine music with augmented reality are starting to rise and they appear to be incredibly promising. Apps like Wavy offer a number of AR experiences through video clips or concerts for the users to encounter from their homes. But what about bringing augmented reality on a live performance?

When Paul Wehner and Tom Brückner met at the 2017 SXSW Hackathon they managed to walk away with the Best Music Prize by creating an AR synthesizer and I assume that they never thought their next innovation, the Marble AR ,would be so close. Marble AR is using augmented reality to reimagine live music performance -both for the performer and the audience. The ultimate goal of this idea is to make it easier to incorporate augmented reality into live music experiences. In detail, Marble AR provides apps which sync AR visuals to live music controlled by audio workstations. The key is a patent-pending called Marble Bridge which supports wearable controllers such as mi.mu gloves or AR based controllers and routs their input to DAWS , lighting etc. With the help of the Marble AR, DJs ,producers and musicians manage to escape the laptop’s captivity and affect visual as well as audio with the movement of their hands. Marble Bridge, supported by other controllers, allows the performer to manipulate the music, control lighting ,split out control messages as well as introduce different types of visuals while the audience points out a mobile phone towards the right direction. To get a better understanding of how Marble Bridge works watch this video of pianist Ralf Schmid using his mi.mu gloves and the marble cube to manipulate music so as to offer his audience a spectacular live performance.

No one can deny that this music startup is truly innovative whether you view it from a startupper or a user perspective.

Nowadays AR apps are thriving in the market, as well as music platforms and therefore combining them both is a sure success. Especially the fact that this app lays on live performances, it creates an undoubtedly unique service and consequently an undoubtedly unique experience for both the artist and the fan. From the artist’s viewpoint Marble AR is a chance of uplifting your performances on a next level by performing something different and contemporary, especially if you are an unconventional artist. Through Marble Bridge you can control multiple parameters of your lives, expand your performance physical limits and overall interact more with your audience through your movements. From a fan’s perspective this app offers a chance of encountering an “out-of-this-world” live performance and creating a stronger bond with your favorite artist, as you can observe the performer producing both acoustic and enhanced visual content at the same time, in real time. The synesthetic visuals can ensure an one-of-a-kind experience.

To conclude, it is obvious that different music applications aim at upgrading the customer’s listening experience by transforming music into deeper visual experience with the use of their mobile devices. Marble AR is taking a step further as it is using augmented reality to reimagine live music performance, offering freedom as well as full control to the performer and allowing the audience to live an immersive, powerful experience. I guess it won’t be long till you see AR music apps dominate the market and therefore encouraging your favorite artist-performer to make use of such AR applications during live performances.
