VIBES: Replaying happiness

Within the context of our assignment in ADandPRLab we decided to make a Start Up that would bring about a change in audio-video ecosystem. We were eager to start, however,we did not know what to expect and frankly i still look back and cannot help but wonder “How did we make it?”.

To start with, everyone in our team listened to radio mostly for music rather than the news. what really mattered to us was creating something unique. That was our motto being unique. Being able to stand out is our idea of success. We wanted to bring radio’s “coolness” back. To be honest, we loved radio as it is but we also knew that there is always room for improvement. Acknowledging that the radio needs a “face-lift” was only the first step we still had a long way to go. During our meetings and amongst the countless ideas the idea was brought to the table unexpectedly. While making small talk about radio and audio innovations” Alexa” came up. Specifically, we talked about Amazon’s gadget and how it brought about changes with its innovative capabilities. That’s when it hit us and we said we are going to make a gadget that will give a “fresh” more technologically updated face to radio as we know it. And so VIBES was born.

VIBES is a portable radio gadget that will untie everyone’s hands. We aimed for the radio listeners that turn on the radio while on the road on their way to work etc. and enable them to listen to radio without being distracted. It has the ability to create playlists, you can Shazam with it skip-stop-replay songs or radio shows only with your voice its the perfect gadget for radio lovers. It can be placed both in the car and the house it has WiFi for web radio and can be connected to the traditional radio device. It is an Eco-friendly gadget designed in way, so that it can function with solar power (and with batteries of course). In order to give it a more unique and personalized character the users can “Nickname Me” making it their own. To conclude with, being able to give commands with their voice, users can participate in radio shows send e-mail to participate in contests and much more which previously could be done only by using their phones.

Our Canvas

In order to achieve our goal we tried to take in to account all the variables we could think of create the following business model canvas:

What we learnt during our time working on this project

1.Always listen to your customers

The first and most important lesson we learnt during our search for the next step was a pivotal one. Being aware of our customer base is of extreme importance on the grounds that their opinion is what matters the most.By doing brief questionnaires we were able to pinpoint the things that they would like to change in today’s radio. This served as a guide light for our efforts and enabled us to see things from a different perspective. Our customers think Radio was “cool” but the vast majority was interested in seeing a more interactive radio.

2.Feedback is your best friend

After every presentation the feedback provided to us by both our fellow aspiring start-uppers and our mentors was eye opening to say the least. Feedback helped up surpass obstacles that we could not find a way around them. Plus the insight from people who have much bigger experience than us was priceless and we learnt a great deal about how the industry we wanted to disrupt actually works. Moreover, no matter how good our idea was there is always room from improvement, even though our last presentation left us feeling extremely proud as the days go by, we still find ourselves looking for more to add. Some tweaks, some additions maybe a new revenue stream? Feedback made us realize there is always more to discover.

3. Working in teams can be a challenge

Being a part of a team has it’s challenges on the grounds that many people with different perspectives, with different ideas, characters come together and need to cooperate in order to create an idea. In our case, we all loved what we were doing and the process was smooth for the most part that does not mean that there were not times when we would absolutely not agree on an idea. Nevertheless, its all part of the process and all this diversity is the ingredient that “spiced” up the whole experience. Besides, were not for all of us individually this project would not have been possible.

Credits

Like all things our experience with ADandPRLab came to an end this semester but the memories will stay with us forever. We learnt a lot of things we had a great time and we grew to love our Start Up very much. Hopefully one day we might see it “come alive” the only certain thing is that we will continue to develop our work and strive for greater heights.Thank you all so much for your help in this endeavor have a great summer.
