Adobe has launched the third generation of its image generator, Firefly Image 3. Features based on the updated model are currently only available in the beta version of Photoshop and the Adobe Firefly web app.

After its first launch, the Firefly image generator received quite a lot of negative feedback: in particular, in terms of functionality it was significantly inferior to competitive models like Midjourney or DALL-E 3, distorting image details and missing nuances in queries. The other day, Adobe released an updated version of the model, which allegedly corrected errors.

From a review of the model on the TechCrunch portal, it follows that the generator now creates more realistic images than the previous version, can understand longer and more complex queries and descriptions, and also aligns the light in the pictures more correctly. According to Adobe’s presentation, the third-generation model more accurately displays lettering, fine details and strokes in drawings, and is «significantly better» at generating images of crowds of people, drawing «detailed facial features» and «a variety of moods and expressions.»

Firefly Image 3 brings several new features to Photoshop beta, in addition to improved text-to-image conversion.

The new auto-stylization switch allows the model to generate a wider range of colors, backgrounds, and object poses.

The Reference Image function makes it possible to load a reference with an image, color or tone, based on which the model will generate the desired drawing. This option can be used instead of text prompts.

Three new generative tools – Generate Background, Generate Similar, and Enhance Details – are designed to help you edit images more thoroughly. The Generate Background function replaces the background on the uploaded image with a generated background that matches it in color and structure. Using “Generate Similar” you can generate different versions of the selected part of the picture (for example, a person or an object). The Enhance Details option optimizes the sharpness and clarity of the drawing.

Adobe Firefly web app now includes Structure Reference and Style Reference options. Using the first, you can create new images that correspond to the “structure” of the loaded reference – for example, a front view of a moving car. The second function will help generate a drawing in the style of a reference – for example, in the form of a pencil sketch.

The company promises to make the features generally available this year, but exactly when is not yet known.
