Why experience and a passion to change are a winning formula.

@Jason wrote Be The Sponge, Not The Rock and while I agree that often people stuck in an industry are the least likely to change, I would question how many of them are creating startups in their industry just to be Rocks. I mean, the premise is pretty silly and it should be pretty obvious from a deck, that these people are just trying to do the same thing they’ve always done.

To say though, that you would rather invest in a team with no experience in a vertical rather than with experience is beyond silly to me. The fact is that those in the domain that are going to the trouble to pitch you or any investors are never going to get in front of you if they aren’t out to change what is wrong with their market. On the premise in your piece though, you would reject them out of hand. I doubt that is actually the case and the idea is just to make a point, but to me the point is invalid.

Our startup — netFundz has 3 guys on our team with decades of experience in the capital advance industry, but the entire point of our business is to radically upset an industry that is tired, boring, technically backwards, and is screwing over small businesses rather than helping them grow. Our founding team is focused upon flipping the industry upside down and somehow the 90 plus years experience of our team hasn’t gotten in the way of that mission.

We’ve seen too many businesses harmed by the industry and we found a way to radically change how it works and funds businesses. Our experience allows us to deal with the technical issues surrounding the merchant cash advance while our vision of a new way drives our mission. Our decades of business experience in tech, marketing, business development, finance, and accounting, means our investors are getting experience and passion with a sponge mentality.

Don’t dismiss experience as rocks that can’t absorb new ideas. As your own example in your story shows even the stale old journalists eventually got it. We just didn’t have to be kicked in the ass to see a better way to make a lot of money and change an industry.
