The Chicago Municipal Elections are nearly here (Feb 26th!), making now the perfect time to know what you can expect — and what you have the right to — when it comes to voting. To help, we’ve compiled some key information from our amazing friends at Chicago Votes!

Here’s what you need to know.

On registering to vote, you have the right to:

  • Register and vote in the same day during grace period (the 27 days before the election).
  • Vote by mail, including those in the military overseas

At your polling place, you have the right to:

  • Expect a nonpartisan environment, free of disruptions and interference
  • Use your old polling location if you have moved within 30 days of the election
  • Vote past voting hours, as long as you were in line by 7 p.m.

When it’s your turn to vote, you have the right to:

  • Vote using a provisional ballot if no record of your registration is found or if your registration is challenged
  • Ask for voting assistance
  • Use a sample ballot as reference- remember, voting is an open-book test!
  • Expect secrecy for your ballot
  • Take your child into the booth with you, if needed
  • Review your voting ballot to make sure everything is accurate — including making changes if there is a mistake or your change your mind
  • Have your ballot counted fairly and impartially

If you feel if any of these rights are being violated, contact election protection ASAP at 1–866-OUR-VOTE!
