The Sierra Assembly sent the Governor a passive-aggressive Christmas present: five bills to repeal some of the last Democratic Governor’s executive orders and a slate of conservative legislation, including a Stand Your Ground law and a repeal of anti-discrimination measures.

The executive orders covered everything from nuclear proliferation to Fox News. While the bills insist on the power of the legislative branch to overturn executive orders, they still require the Governor’s signature — something Governor Zairn says will be withheld.

The seventh session also saw two gun laws pass with narrow majorities. The Open Carry Act seeks to allow Sierrans to carry unloaded handguns and other firearms in the open, without adding any new permitting requirements.

The Stand Your Ground Law would make it easier for civilians acting in self-defense to avoid the threat of prosecution. The law, while technically applicable to situations other than those involving firearms, has been criticized as enabling gun violence and racial bias.

The Assembly also passed a bill repealing discrimination laws and prohibiting municipal rent control measures. A bill allowing taxpayers to use cryptocurrency to pay their taxes narrowly failed, and a repeal of a plastic straw ban tied.

Sources in the Governor’s office suggested that the press should expect a flurry of vetoes when the Assembly returns following its holiday recess.
