SIEDC Employment Program to help Staten Islander’s Find Work
Bank of America provides funding for the SI Works program which will match Staten Island residents with the right industrial jobs.
Staten Island, New York, September 24, 2018: Last week, the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation (SIEDC) got a boost from Bank of America in the form of a $25,000 grant for the “SI Works” employment program. Bank of America representatives Madeline Quinn and Joe Torres presented the SIEDC with a check at the most recent SIEDC Board meeting.
The “SI Works” program fosters the connection between employers and potential employees in order to help local industrial, manufacturing and transportation businesses better connect to the local workforce to fill these job requests. The SI Works program allows business owners to submit their hiring needs and receive resumes which have been reviewed by trusted sources, all free of charge.
The SIEDC represents 200 member businesses as well as over 900 businesses through neighborhood development efforts. As the premier business group on Staten Island, SIEDC has been able to create an expansive network of businesses that are associated with the new development and projects happening across the Island. These projects have created an uptick in new jobs but unfortunately, there is a disconnect between small businesses and potential employees — especially in low-income communities.
With the development of projects like the Amazon and Ikea distribution centers, Broadway Stages, Empire Outlets, NY Wheel, and Lighthouse Point there will be a serious influx of jobs on Staten Island in the next five years. Staten Island’s local businesses will look to expand their workforce thanks to all of the prime and subcontractor opportunities available for these various projects. SIEDC recognizes the need for a workforce program able to accommodate the nuances of the local market, sustain existing businesses and to attract new development and investment. Filling these positions is a critical and important aspect of improving the economic landscape of Staten Island.
The SIEDC has hired Jay Anderson as the SI Works Employment Manager. Jay previously worked with the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation (SIEDC) for 15 proud years as the Director of Projects. He has a background in small business operations and development and extensive experience operating businesses in both Brooklyn and Staten Island. He worked with local merchant associations in improving their commercial districts and is an inaugural graduate of the College of Staten Island Leadership Institute Program. He has worked as a business consultant at the Small Business Development Center and has been a member of the Job Service Employment Committee and the BUCKS Business Networking Club. He has served on the Metropolitan College of New York Advisory Council, Bay Ridge Parks, and Waterfront Committee.
