What can you do to create a deliberate future and feel ownership of your career? Try the Repeat the Future strategy. This can help avoid having imposter syndrome upon reaching your goal.

Did you know that becoming successful is more achievable upon accepting that you will be successful? However; this is a process, not just a choice. Upon completing the process, you can proceed to become successful with rather surgical precision.

Can success just happen?

It is possible to become successful through happenstance such as being in the right place at the right time, falling into the right network, being the beneficiary of the right mentor — all underscored by the right work ethic. Sometimes people that experience success via such favorable conditions suffer from what is known as imposter syndrome.

The idea that you’ve only succeeded due to luck, and not because of your talent or qualifications.

- Abigail Abrams

Many people that become successful by chance also feel like prisoners to their success. Even if they can imagine more suitable careers to pursue, they get stuck on that one track due to a lack of confidence about being lucky enough to succeed twice.

Preventing Imposter Syndrome

What can you do to create a deliberate future and feel ownership of your career? Try the Repeat the Future strategy. This can help avoid having imposter syndrome upon reaching your goal.

The 7-Step Process

  1. Name your goal;‍
  2. Map the traditional route to your goal (education / job titles);‍
  3. For each part of education and job title, write down the behaviors, characteristics, and skills you will need to demonstrate;‍
  4. For each behavior, characteristic, and skill put a checkmark beside those you are able to do effectively now;‍
  5. For the remaining behaviors, characteristics, and skills assign how you are going to attain them such as education, mentorship, experience, etc.;‍
  6. Review the list monthly to keep what needs development top of mind, giving you motivation, and making you ready to seize an opportunity such as a project or strategically approaching a mentor;‍
  7. Cross each accomplishment off your list on the way to your goal.
