2016, around July & August, we were deciding whether to open source Status — a choice that would forever dictate the direction of this project. Rationally I knew of the benefits: pooling talent, the need for security, being inline with the values of the Ethereum community — that this decision would be the right and just thing to do.

Though I was personally driven by a desire to open source, there were some significant emotional hurdles to overcome — facing potential fears that could be realised. What I have found in the past week, is that this decision has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, not because Status is open source, but because the people who have contributed have helped make this a wonderful experience. That leadership can be done in a different way, it’s not just about execution and morale — it’s about cultivating culture, belonging, meaning and letting go. Allowing myself and the project to be open to new, fresh ideas and to ‘grow’ software & community — rather than construct it.

Please meet the people who have helped me, just as much as they’ve helped Status.

Top Developers

Gustavo Nunes

github/GustavoNunes

Relatively little is known about Gustavo except that he is from Brazil, this is his first open source project and he doesn’t mess around, just look at how Gustavo has come out guns blazing and has been squashing bugs left right and center!

Teemu Patja

github/tpatja

Teemu is a programmer from Helsinki, Finland currently doing software development management and is fan of Ethereum. He has worked with several native IM/real time communication apps over the years on both desktop and mobile! He’s fixed a bug and added the Finnish language to Status. What I’m most excited about is he is looking at our Github Bounty bot, Commiteth and hopefully we can get it up and running in the near future.

Harsh Vakharia

github/harshjv
harshjv.github.io

Harsh is a computer engineering graduate from India and a developer for WINGS.ai.

He discovered a missing comma in one of our javascript commands, unsure how it worked before!

Top Testers

Rabbit

github/rabbit, twitter/rabbyte

Rabbit has put in an amazing diligent effort in testing and reporting issues in Status,
She is the author for over 15 Github Issues alone!

What’s also remarkable is we have a shared vision of what a client should be and I am looking forward to working with Rabbit on the future direction of Status. #topthoughtleader

Top Evangelist

Nick

github/etherReal, twitter/CampEtherReal
http://etherre.al

“Identification without Subjugation!” Nick is working on a trustless Attestation and Authentication system — an Identity solution on the blockchain.

On top of that he has been lining up interviews for us, promoting Status in different conversations around the internet and bringing people into our Slack!

Top Documenter

Andy Tudhope

andytudhope.com

A South African who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics & Applied Mathematics as well as a Master’s Degree in the English Language and Literature from Oxford.

He has unique insights into Smart Contracts from a literary perspective. One that blew my mind is that there is a large and largely unbridgeable gap between what we do and what we say in the humanities. It’s why it has become next to impossible to say anything meaningful (esp politically meaningful) in natural language.

However, what a program says and what it does are inseparable, and that is a very attractive feature to someone who spent 6 years being told that that sort of thing is impossible. You can also check out a copy of his book “Recollections and Roadtrips” here.

Andy has contributed to our Wiki with a guide on how to get started and how to submit translations!

Top Thought Leaders

It goes without saying that Rabbit is helping us shape the future of Status, and you can read more about her under Top Testers.

Daniel Ellison

github/zigguratt
blog.syrinx.net

Daniel has been resurrecting LLL in an 8 Part series. One of the first languages that existed for the EVM.

He has implemented Ethereum Name Service in LLL and has breathed new life into the language, making it more readable with the use of macros.

We’ve been strategising with Conrad Barski in our Slack channel #lll on how we could potentially create a new, more Lisp-like version of LLL.

Top Translators

Roland Kofler

github/rolandkofler
twitter/rolandk
ibc.technology

Roland is a Ethereum Developer, Software Architect, Data Scientist and Project Manager. He works in IT since 18 years and is an active member in the Blockchain community since 2013.

He has helped us fix a number of issues in our German translations!

Dietmar Hofer

github/d10r

Didi is a member of BlockchainHub Graz and explores the technical and philosophical aspects of emerging decentralisation technologies, with special focus on Ethereum.

His latest project was die-unendliche-wahl.at, a satirical reference to the Austrian presidential election 2016 in the form of a Blockchain voting PoC.

He made our chat messages look better with auto-capitalisation and found some errors in the English and German translations of Status.

Francesco

github/thehealthycat

Francesco studies Medicine at Padua, in Italy and has been interested in Ethereum since it’s Olympic release, and his Italian translation corrections was his first ever pull request! You can find him as peg60 on our Slack.

Also a special thank-you to github/vicodin1123 and github/MCRy for their translation corrections in Italian and Mandarin. (I couldn’t find you guys on Slack or much info on you online, message me so I can give you proper credit!)

Would you like to contribute and join our growing community? Head on over to our Slack and read the Status Wiki. You can also follow our progress on Twitter.
