Before the pandemic, Hong Kong was a travel destination for over 65.2 million visitors, where most of the visitors (78%) were from Mainland China. However, this figure dropped sharply by 99.9% when Covid hit. So what can we do?

But… Did you know that Hong Kong is also seeing a 15% increase in the growth of local travel?

When your travel world shrinks or becomes non-existent, we all try to find loopholes to enjoy ourselves again. Staycations are now on the rise as it is the simplest and most convenient way for us to “travel”.

So… how else can they travel?

Just like Singaporeans, many Hong Kongers are bound to the country. So what other ways are there for them to have a short getaway? Well, many of them choose to spend their annual leave on staycations, where 85% of them yearn to experience a staycation within the next 6 months and 60% of them have already been on one. On top of that, current hotel occupancy rates are at 71% in 2021 as compared to 79% in 2019 when travelling was permitted.

Many Hong Kongers have also shared that they prefer micro-stays for several reasons: value for money, great facilities as well as fine-dining options for them to disconnect from their busy lifestyles. So will this be a new trend?

Micro-stays are here to stay.

Micro-stay is the concept of providing hotel rooms to guests on an hourly basis, often also referred to as daycations or short-stays in many countries. This concept became famous in Europe during the economic downturn when fewer people were travelling. This concept is now catching quickly up in America and India, as well as ASEAN countries.

Demand for spaces hourly has also reached an all-time high since the emergence of the pandemic in 2019, with over 150 hotels in Hong Kong offering hourly bookings. And of course, these include Kowloon Shangri-La, Regal Hong Kong, The Park Lane and The Langham. (Yes! You heard it right, 5-star hotels are doing it too.)

Where can I book by the hour, anytime, anywhere?

Staycations have now become a timeless leisure and have definitely impacted lives all over the world one way or another. With the increasing demand for micro-stays in Hong Kong, many hotels have now enabled bookings by the hour.

Alternatively, if you’d like additional savings you can also check out Stayr that provides spaces by the hour, anytime and anywhere. Not just hotel rooms, Stayr offers accommodations such as workspaces as well.
