Dear Summer
Poem by Timea K.
9th-12th GRADE FINALIST FOR SPRING 2024 POETRY CONTEST. Prompt: All submissions must be in the form of an epistolary poem. An epistolary poem is a poem that reads as a letter to any person, place, or thing. As poems of direct address, they can be intimate and colloquial, or formal and measured. The subject matter can range from philosophical investigation to a declaration of love to a list of errands, and epistles can take any form, from heroic couplets to free verse. Your poem must be between 150 and 300 words.
Winter has packed its bags, yet it’s still so cold out here
It’s put its boots away into the closet
And has hung up its coats and jackets
It’s cleared way for grass and flowers
Allowed an environment for bees and butterflies
It’s welcomed spring, with its rain and allergies
With its blooming trees and creepy crawlers
It’s layed down a path for woken and hungry critters
Winter has packed its bags and whispered goodbye, I’ll be back again
Once spring comes around, we’ll all be hoping for summer
School’s out, pools open, ice cream trucks make an appearance
And for the couple months you choose to stay, we’ll have more time
We’ll have more time to read books, draw pictures, see friends and family
The days will be longer, sunsets late and awfully gorgeous
Picnics and beaches, vacations and weddings
I miss you summer, and your wonderful memories
Please, when you come back, bring me a box of my happiest moments
Sincerely, me
