Why we’re building Stellar
For the last decade, high-stress lifestyles have been prioritized at the expense of personal wellbeing, resulting in exhausted bodies and brains. Since the pandemic, mental illness has surged, leaving victims scrambling for sources of support. But with more people willing to ask for help, why does it feel as if therapy isn’t working anymore?
While our use of mental health resources continues to hike, the number of clinicians qualified to provide that care has plateaued. What we’re left with is an incredibly overextended pool of therapists, with around one mental health provider for every 3000 patients in need. In response, we’ve seen increasing wait times, less outcome measurement, and in some cases even a lowered bar for providing care.
We need to do better if we want our people to get better.
Today, we’re excited to announce the launch of Stellar — the hybrid-AI care program that will help mental health patients get better faster by intelligently sharing the missing context that enables providers to be more effective. We are not building an AI therapist. We have a deep appreciation for therapists’ craft, and believe we can leverage recent advancements in computing to drastically extend their reach by helping with everything from instant risk triaging to long-term care planning.
Stellar offers a baseline level of care to everyone, and helps push those with specific needs to specialized clinicians faster. We’re doing research across LLMs, biometric health sensing, and pattern recognition that will allow truly context-driven mental healthcare to arise. That means 24/7 access to care anywhere in the world. That means stronger relationships between therapists and their patients. That means more informed diagnostics, care coordination, and matching.
That means we can all get better, together.
