Thoughts on Product Hunt

Good

  • So addictive and fun for makers, it literally felt like going to a conference or a trade show for a day or two
  • Devs have felt the pain and difficulty of selling and have actively worked to remove obstacles as well as polish UX, bugs, etc
  • Great way to reach out and get back in touch with your own tech network as well as network with other product leaders which is especially cool since we are not traveling or going to conferences anymore since COVID

Bad

  • I joined in 2014, made only one product, even though I made multiple since then and haven’t used it much since.
  • I remember there was a time I checked it every day but at some point I stopped because there were too many junk products and possibly I hated the GIFs everywhere (even though I’ll admit they are a lot more eye catchy)

Ideas

Questions

  • What I really don’t understand is how the algorithm works. We’ve been consistently having more upvotes, comments and reviews with Calendbook yet we are always behind a bunch of other products. Seems like it’s mostly editorial choices, which is not necessarily bad but maybe it would be good to have read some feedback as to why of certain decisions to make the process more transparent and stimulate learnings.

P.s. I wrote this as 5:42am and posting it without much proofreading so be lenient on me. Plus I’m a bad writer!
