Time to run through our guidelines before submitting to STEM First! Gen. We recommend doing so before sending us your draft, via our form.

Writer’s Identity

We love to learn more about our contributors. If you have a unique bio to share with us, please do include it!

Topic Areas

Here’s the topics we look forward to featuring:

  • How you found your passion for STEM
  • Success/motivational stories
  • How you bring STEM and non-science fields together (STEM & Co.)
  • Anything #scicomm and #sciart
  • Bio about how you (and your team if you got one) endeavor in STEM
  • Ideas or proposals about science communication and uplifting STEM students

Passion Discovery for STEM

For some of us, STEM was not love at first site. Think of character arcs, or the journey of a character throughout a story. It focuses on character development. Unique stories of how STEM came of interest to you are welcome.

Motivation

Do you have a moving story about your academic journey? Send it to us!

STEM & Co.

We would love to hear how you use non-science fields (cinematography, writing, art, etc.) combined with STEM. Inform the world that you do not have to be a strict STEM devotee.

Anything #SciComm & #SciArt

That’s right. Share your sciart (animations, sketches, etc.) and your styles of science communication (blog, YouTube, presentations, etc.) with us. You can also tag us on Twitter for a repost at @stemfirstgen.

STEM Endeavors/Ideas

If you (and your team) are doing something sci-awesome, it’s worth reaching out to us! Tell us how you’re innovating and advocating for science. If your article is an informative piece, we advise you to cite responsibly.

And more! We will revise and discuss with you, so feel free to ask us if your pitch is appropriate (most likely, yes!).

Things to Note

Please heed to this section of our guidelines.

Follow the Medium Rules

You can read their rules here. We wish to keep this publication friendly for all. NSFW (not safe for work) content has to be dismissed for now (Monique Faith Boodram has a cunning plan).

All contributing authors must have a Medium account.

All it needs is your email — it’s free! We can not submit the article unless it comes from you, the Medium writer.

We do not take articles under the partner program.

Our publication is completely free. We do not pay writers for their articles. Furthermore, we do not get paid for our publication. Please make sure your article is made for everyone to see/read — that means do not meter your story.

Include Citations

If the article is evidence based, or if you include images/media that do not belong to you, please cite the sources used in the article. MLA is encouraged. Citing is unnecessary for personal narratives that do not include information from other sources. For everyone’s safety, the editor shall review for plagiarism and contact the writer if there are any questions.

Author Tagging

We like to tag our contributing authors on Twitter, and also hope to follow and add them to our “STEM First! Gen.” Twitter list. This is optional, but we encourage authors to join #AcademicTwitter with us.

That’s all for now!

This submissions guideline will be updated if any changes are made, and furthermore it shall be reposted. You can submit your article here, at this Google Form:
