Tuesday, June 8th was World Oceans Day! To raise awareness about the importance and beauty of this grand resource and home, we hosted a simple Twitter thread of art. Supporting sci-artists came together to share their works in honour of this special day, showing us the value of our oceans.

Artists play a vital role in inspiring action through the power of grabbing the attention of our creative side. This week, they once again gave us the opportunity to be awestruck by what the ocean holds for us. To thank them for their work, STEM First! Gen. is going to present to you the pieces of our World Oceans Day art competition!

Inspiration for the Thread: Michelle Lehman

Michelle is a science animation producer who passionately illuminates scientific research through her 2D and 3D visuals. A first generation alum at Middlebury College, she continues to play an active role in mentorship and advocacy for science and well-being through her brilliant visuals.

Her first post on #WorldsOceansDay gave rise to the idea of hosting our sciart thread. Michelle again stunned us with her new parallaxing illustration!

To see more of her fine graphics, check out her show-reels on Miche’s Niche, and follow her Twitter and Instagram on @miches_niche! 💖

Nicki Shaw’s Baby Bigfin Reef Squid

Cartoon by Nicki Shaw @nickisdoodles (2021).

I love that the ocean is full of amazing creatures big and small — like these “fierce” baby Bigfin reef squid!

— Nicki

Nicki takes scicomm to a whole new level of fun! She’s a cartoonist and sciartist, making the imagination run wild with cute doodles about science concepts and fun facts; there is a new light in these illustrations! Her comic, “The Olilu Tails” (#theloltails on Instagram and Twitter), is another great charm of hers.

We love the joy Nicki brings! Check her out on nicoleneverstops.com, her Twitter and Instagram @nickisdoodles. 💕

Patricia Bondia’s Fantastic 3D Model

Model by Patricia Bondia @patriciabondia (2021).

This 3D model was inspired by the creatures of the ocean that remain undiscovered and by the irresponsibility of humans for destroying their habitat with the uncontrolled release of pollutants.

— Patricia

The ocean is home to many of the mysterious creatures that are hidden in the ocean’s deep. It’s our responsibility to protect and preserve them, because if we continue our irrational use of the ocean for waste disposal, these organisms will remain unknown, and eventually cease to exist. All of us would experience a great loss. Thank you, Patricia, for demonstrating this aspect through your imaginative 3D model. The message sent through this illustration is moving.

Patricia Bondia is a 3D science illustrator — a creator of many ornate models. You can find an entire gallery of her work on ArtStation, and follow her on Twitter at @patriciabondia. 💓

We would once again like to thank Michelle, Nicki, and Patricia for participating in our sciart uplift! Thank you for inspiring — continue shining!

Tune in for more sciart challenges from STEM First! Gen.
