Why Evil Isn’t Natural

In chapter 2 Miller argues that we are perverse — which is to go against what is right even when the consequences are known — because if humans are left to themselves then we are not good to one another. The American system according to Miller is not freedom rather it is a form of jail that keeps us from acting out and doing harsh things. If we are caught doing these harsh things, then we are punished even further to try and break us into submission so that we won’t do those things again. This keeps humans from doing things that are considered by others to be morally evil.

Miller quoted his friend Tony in his book and Tony said, “” We have been taught to be good. It doesn’t come completely natural. In my mind, that’s a flaw in the human condition. “” Basically what Tony is saying here is that humans have been taught by one another to be nice and not do things that are considered perverse such as harming one another.

Thus, I agree with Miller that Humans are perverse not entirely evil. Reading novels such as Lord of the Flies exposes how without a system to keep humans in check that they’ll break down and attempt to gain as much power as possible over one another. Reverting hundreds of years of evolution in minutes by reverting to our primitive and survival of the fittest ideology.

Evil, what is it? What is evil considered to be, a small moment in life or a major event? Evil is defined as an immoral act or wickedness, sometimes describing the supernatural. Does this mean an evil event is a run in with the devil or just any immoral action? By any means I believe that evil or perverse actions come from within by nature but because of god creating us and the mistakes of Adam and Eve that we have become immorally evil as god changed us to be imperfect. This would explain how we were originally perfect in god’s image until their mistake which made us become more immoral and after thousands of years of evolution nothing has changed which is natural because we’re still animals.

The first time I considered the world to be broken was out here. The perfect image of this world was given to us by god where everything lives harmoniously, and no acts of horrible deeds are done. However, in the beginning a serpent tricked humans into eating a forbidden fruit which doomed the earth to be imperfect forever. Now this doesn’t mean it’s broken it just implies that we could change the world to be better but what makes it broken is the way we treat one another. Using politics as an example, republicans and democrats no longer do what’s good for the country rather what their extreme sides want to throw in each other’s face. The betterment for the country would be a moderate nominee but we haven’t had one of those for almost two decades now which makes it hard to trust one another when both parties are slowly destroying the country by creating it in their image and not the image the American people need.

Am I broken? Yes, and the reason why is because I was once pure. Now I’ve been exposed to the harsh elements of the world and it has taken a toll in me leading to the conclusion that I am broken and can’t be reverted to pure.

Evil does not exist in this world; evil was created because of our moral code. If someone is seen as evil, then it is because it is against the moral code that society has set. If we were as moral as the person next to us, then evil would still exist because differences would arise but if we reverted to the natural world then evil wouldn’t exist.
