Christmas eve, Michael should have stayed at the airport. Instead the hire car is embedded in a snowdrift.

Should have stayed put but reckoned on a three hour hike, tops. It was now past midnight.

Scrunch, scrunch, scrunching along Michael’s mind wandered. Did little Stevie put out mince pies and brandy for Santa? He could do with a nip. With hardly a breeze, moon lit frozen whiteness continued to feather down, dampening sound, dampening spirit. In different circumstances this would be magical.

The distant beacon of a porch light twinkled into view and Michael collapsed here, like every year before.
