Interpretation of Story

This is just my opinion, based on logic shown below.

  1. There are 3 sections. Each could be beginning, middle and end.
Beginning: He squeezed her hand; — note the long pause “;”
    Middle: then some more.
    End: She was silent.
  2. There are 2 characters in this story, He and She.
  3. They have some relationship, a relationship intimate enough to allow holding of hands.
  4. They are not holding each other’s hands equally, in fact He squeezed her hand and she didn’t squeeze back.
  5. Then He squeezed some more — So, He seems to be in control.
  6. She is not reacting at all. She is being passive.
  7. The relationship is one-sided and further entrenched when she becomes silent.
  8. The actions of He is dominant and the lack of actions of She make her passive.
  9. What sort of relationship fits this logic?

Initially, I decided this was an abusive relationship. But, then someone pointed out that there is no actual abuse written about. What is written about is a “controlling” relationship. Undoubtedly abuse would soon follow if she didn’t give in totally.

What do you think?
