Will A Glass Claim Increase My Premium?

One of the most common insurance claims filed in Arizona is a glass claim. The desert landscapes and constant road construction in the Metropolitan Phoenix Area make cracks and chips in a windshield almost unavoidable. As a result, we are often asked, “If I file a glass claim, will it increase my insurance payment?”

Not likely — if you have Comprehensive Coverage.

Claims impact how much you pay for insurance, but not in the way you might think. The type and frequency is more influential than the amount of the claim itself. This is also true of glass claims.

However, this question is typically irrelevant if you don’t have a glass endorsement on your policy. The deductible — the amount you pay before the insurance company pays on a claim — is typically higher than the cost of replacing a windshield out-of-pocket.

PRO TIP: If you live in Arizona, always make sure your auto insurance has the glass coverage add-on. It is inexpensive and something you will likely use.

If you have glass coverage on your auto insurance and file a claim to get your windshield replaced, it should not increase your monthly premium payment. However, if you have a large number of prior glass claims, you could find a change in your rates. As mentioned in this blog, the frequency of claims will impact your insurance payments. Specifically, with glass claims in Arizona, if you have 10 claims within a five-year period, the insurance company will likely respond. They may react by increasing your insurance payments, or they may remove glass coverage from your policy.

If you have glass coverage, don’t be afraid to file a glass claim. But, as with all insurance claims, try to keep the number of these to a minimum.
