If you are currently in the United States as a spouse or a dependent of an H1B visa holder, you are probably on an H4 visa and unsure what you can do with your time. Unfortunately, an H4 visa does not give you authorization to work, unless your spouse is in the process of a green card application. We know this can be extremely frustrating and you could be wondering if you would be better off at home. In this article, we will look at some of the different options that are available to you while you are in possession of an H4 visa.

Find a sponsor If you are on an H4 visa you are already in the United States so it will become a lot easier for you to find an employer to sponsor you for an H1B visa. You can take your time to look for a suitable job and your spouse may be able to help you through connections they have made in work. You do not have to worry about your application being unsuccessful because the worst case scenario is that you remain in the United States on your H4 visa.

Go to university While you are in the United States on an H4 visa you are eligible to study. You will be able to research different schools and courses. Try to train yourself with a skill that will give you the best possible chance of finding work when you have finished. Unfortunately, if you are studying on an H4 visa you are not entitled to OPT, Optional Practical Training, like people on an F1 visa. By the time you finish your course, your spouse may be in the process of applying for a green card, this would allow you to apply for an EAD and have the right to work. You would also be in a far better position to find an H1B sponsor.

Study on an F1 visa If you choose to go to university on your H4 visa, it might be possible to get a Change of Status to an F1 visa while you are studying. You will need to meet certain conditions in your course to qualify for a Change of Status. By changing to an F1 Visa you will be eligible for OPT after you graduate. This will give you the chance to work and showcase your skills to any would be H1B visa sponsors.

Volunteer work If you simply want something to occupy your time and you are not worried about making money, volunteer work could be a good option for you. If you have experience or expertise in a particular field, it might be a good idea to seek a volunteer position in that field. This will allow you to network and make new connection which could help you to find an H1B sponsor in the future.
