💰We’ve raised a €16.5M (~$20M) Series A round. It’ll help us do more, sooner
Advancing a more sustainable and nourishing food system is more urgent than ever. Our recent funding will accelerate the scaling of our team, product portfolio, and geographic footprint — all part of our quest to create the world’s most ambitious cheese.
Stockeld Dreamery was started because we love cheese, but not what it takes to currently produce cheese. The latest IPCC report made clear how climate change is quickly intensifying, and we already know that the food system including livestock is a major driver of climate change.
We think it’s possible to create cheese in better ways, and that no-one has tried hard enough yet to do so. Our first product Stockeld Chunk, launched in May 2021, gave a hint as to what’s possible. One of the things we’re most proud about with Stockeld Chunk is how much people love eating it 😃 ; we’ve worked intensively with scores of chefs over the past few years to help nail every sensory aspect. We’ll continue to be as laser focused on great taste as we launch our new products.
Since Stockeld Dreamery was started in 2019, we’ve had some major scientific breakthroughs, but we know we’re still only scratching the surface of what’s possible. And we don’t want to trivialize the challenges ahead: What we’re doing is incredibly hard, requires a ton of smart people, expensive equipment, patience, perseverance — and capital.
That’s why the support from our initial backers was so crucial. Partnering with Astanor Ventures, Northzone, Inventure, Creandum, Kale United, Purple Orange Ventures, Martas Explorers, Henry Soesanto, and angels such as Eric Wahlforss has worked out great. And since the collaboration with Astanor Ventures and Northzone has been particularly fruitful, it only felt natural that they led our new €16.5M (~$20M) Series A round.
Joining this round (which we think might be the largest-ever Series A round for a European plant-based alternatives startup) is a new group of fantastic investors, including Gullspång Re:food, Eurazeo, Norrsken VC, Edastra, Trellis Road, plus angels such as David Frenkiel (Green Kitchen Stories) and Alexander Ljung. We’re so thrilled that many want to join us on our journey, and we’re looking forward to working with them too.
In the last 12 months, we’ve expanded our team from 4 to 22 people. By the end of next year, we’ll likely be around 50 team members (yeah, we’re hiring!). In 2022, we’ll move into a state-of-the-art headquarter and pilot production plant in Stockholm, Sweden, with enough room for ~50 R&D colleagues and almost as many in other functions. We’ll release new products that we hope consumers will love. And we’ll expand our footprint beyond Sweden. Just to mention a few things.
So we’re excited! Our vision is to create the world’s most ambitious cheese, and this funding round takes us one step closer to that goal.
