In the Wild: Chipmunk Experiments, Part I
We built Chipmunk for creative teams in a variety of roles, disciplines, and industries. As we have been preparing for launch, we’ve spent a lot of time putting ourselves in the shoes of our users. We’ve drawn on our own real-world experiences, those of our friends, and other industry professionals to get an idea of what their use of Chipmunk might look like and are sharing those ideas here.
This snapshot into the workflow of fictional Artan Design provides a glimpse into one project where Chipmunk manages the creative workflow from start to finish. It is the first part of a series of use case scenarios where we put our ideas to the test and share the results.

Artan Design is a boutique design agency that contracts with many local businesses for branding services. Sable Sewing, a notoriously old-fashioned, independent sewing shop, wants Artan to help create a new, modern image so they can attract a younger clientele.
Marta, a creative lead at Artan, meets with Kelly, Sable Sewing’s owner, to discuss her marketing goals. Kelly and Marta identify some themes and key ideas the Sable Sewing team wants reflected in their new branding, along with some inspiration images that they feel express this new direction.
Later, Marta meets with the production team at Artan and shares the information she has so far, tasking them with creating something new. She creates a “Sable Sewing” project in Chipmunk, along with a “Rebrand” collection for this assignment where she adds Sable Sewing’s existing logo for later reference. She also creates a “Rebrand Inspiration” collection in the same project where she adds the reference images they’ve been using for ideas.
Brenda, the lead designer on this project, focuses on refreshing the logo, while Katie, a copywriter, works on messaging for some new social media graphics. After drafting a few ideas, Brenda and Katie upload their concepts to the “Rebrand” collection for the team’s review.
The team meets to review their progress and Brenda presents the “Rebrand” collection to Marta and the other creatives working on the project. Her contact sheet with 5 concepts for the logo refresh has been added as a new revision atop the current Sable Sewing logo in order to preserve the entire lifetime of the logo, from start to finish. Three social media graphics have been uploaded as well. During their meeting, the design team chooses two logo concepts they agree will work best, leaving comments in Chipmunk during their discussion with requests for tweaks and revisions. The social media graphics are good to go, so they’re approved and will be made ready for use when the project is completed.
Brenda tightens up the logo concepts based on the comments from the meeting and after some fine-tuning, they’re added as the next revision to the logo in the “Rebrand” collection before they’re presented to Sable Sewing. Kelly makes her decision and asks for some minor adjustments, so Marta comments on the assets needing modification. Once the Artan team makes the requested changes, the client signs off.
Marta shares the completed Sable Sewing collection with Kelly. Sable Sewing can now get started rebranding themselves, downloading the assets in any format they need directly from the Chipmunk collection — without the ability to make edits, see prior comments and revisions, or accidentally overwrite the work done by Marta and her team.
In the coming months and years, Kelly can easily reference to Artan any items in her collection and any additional collections made for future projects. Using Chipmunk, Artan and their client Sable Sewing are always on the same page.
