This is the second installment in our In the Wild series, showcasing using Chipmunk across various disciplines. See the first of the series here.

Now that we’ve left early access, we want to spotlight Reim Entertainment, one of our favorite early adopters, and share how they use Chipmunk to streamline and simplify their game development process to focus on what they love: creating great games.

Reim Entertainment, an up and coming gaming and entertainment startup, currently consists of 7 remote team members living in different states across the US. They share a passion for making video games focused on detailed storytelling and narratives, describing their current project, codenamed “Project Blue,” as “an original IP that has an in-depth narrative set in our modern-day world with technology, fantasy, hardship and our ability as human beings to persevere.”

The team turned to Chipmunk because they couldn’t keep track of the content they were producing. Without a centralized, backed-up storage solution, unforeseeable problems with any local machines used across the team could result in losing all raw asset data. With Chipmunk, remote artists can upload assets to our cloud platform, keeping them protected and centralized.

“Having a cloud solution was a requirement right out the door. With assets in the cloud, everyone who needs access to the assets can get to them. Artists, 3D modelers, and programmers can seamlessly work together,” Reim Entertainment founder Christopher Reimschussel reflects.

Chipmunk, of course, is so much more than a simple repository to store and centralize assets. Integrated tightly with Unity, Reimschussel describes his team’s workflow within Chipmunk:

When our artist or 3D modeler finishes an asset, they upload it to Chipmunk … Our programmer then links the asset in Unity and works on it from there. Later, if our artist or 3D modeler needs to make a change to their assets, they don’t need to jump into Unity. Since we are using the Chipmunk Unity plugin, by simply uploading a revision to Chipmunk with the new version, it will seamlessly be synced to Unity without any extra steps. Done and done!

As a relatively new company, Reim Entertainment did extensive research and testing before deciding on using an asset management system. Their team had very specific requirements, including support for their version control system, and we were excited to hear that Chipmunk was the only solution that could meet them all.

“The Chipmunk Unity plugin that is currently in development is a game changer. No other solution we looked at had this kind of support. Chipmunk understands the needs of artists and developers,” Reimschussel comments.

Since we at Thinksquirrel started work on Chipmunk, our goal has been helping startups — like ourselves and Reim Entertainment — simplify processes. In fact, not finding an affordable and versatile solution for managing all our content is what headed us down the path toward creating Chipmunk in the first place. As we grow and as Chipmunk develops, we hope to get to know many more of the teams using our products and learn how we can help them work better.
