I too believe that it is essential that one can recognise the difference between the good and the evil and not let your good be affected by the evil of others. Nowadays, road rage is something extremely prevalent. I remember how my father used to react when someone cut him off or is doing something that would put us in danger. Ofcourse he was furious and jamming the horn, but he did not cuss or set a bad example for us. I could tell he was angry but he was still composed regardless. Although anger isn’t regarded as a virtue and you could argue that my father was influenced by emotions and let the bad effect his good, I believe he acted just like any other human being would.

Sometimes, I feel that Marcus’s writing is written with an arrogant tone. How, if others are causing you to feel emotions such as anger or resentment, it is their fault for not recognising what is important in life and that if they had a better understanding perhaps they would not act this way. There is the assumption that the individual applying this philosophy is somehow always on the moral high ground and always correct.

Excluding what I previously wrote, I do Marcus’s views on the idea of citizenship and as human beings we should “display love for his fellow human beings, as well as goodness, justice, kindness and concern for his neighbour. Your relationsip with others can also serve as a method of self development as it is an essentail of a virtuous man. Marcus too lived by this and avoided being ‘stained by purple’.
