How to Bring Back the Stoic School
An answer to Yordan Tsalov’s article
In an article published on 26 September 2019, Yordan Tsalov supported the need to rebuild a Stoic school taking into account modern developments. His point was as follows : a Stoic school should be simple, accessible but not simplistic ; pragmatic but not dogmatic ; practical but not escapist. It should teach Stoic ethics, psychotherapy, metaphysics, the History of Western thought and the great figures of Stoicism, logic and strategic thinking.
While his post is useful to raise awareness about the inadequacy of self-help books and the usefulness of creating physical facilities where Stoics could meet, I think it remains incomplete or inaccurate on some points. This answer is not intended to generate an ideological conflict but to contribute to the construction of the theoretical foundations of a new Stoic educational institution.
On the format of education
Reading the description proposed by Yordan Tsalov, it would seem that the courses of a Stoic school are more more less similar to some theoretical philosophy courses at the university. It is never mentioned that…
